Merged on 6 October 2021. Removed on 6 October 2026. Five years to the day, a debug line printed BigQuery dataset labels at warning level every time Apache Beam's Python SDK set up a temporary dataset.
_LOGGER.warning("### Labels: %s", str(self.bigquery_dataset_labels))Why it looked like a leftover
- ### appears in no other logging call across the 1,380 Python files of the SDK
- str() is redundant with %s
- It was the only warning-level call in the module, and it reported a value the caller had supplied in the first place
git blame put the line in the pull request that added BigQuery Read API support, merged in October 2021. It had not changed since.
Why it was safe to remove
No test referred to it: the only log assertion in that package targets a debug message on an unrelated path. The module logger is still used at nine call sites, so nothing became unused. The formatter pinned by the project produced no diff. And in case the maintainers wanted the value kept visible, I offered to demote it to debug instead.
What I take from it
A one-line pull request still has to win an argument. The diff cannot make it, so the description does: where the line came from, why it is noise, what depends on it. Here the answer to the last question was nothing, and saying so with evidence is what got it merged.
